When talking about Linux, you should always state which version of libc you
are using. There was a bug in a header file in a pre-4.5.26 release that
would cause the problem you are having. [I don't have those include files
around any more, but if memory serves, the offending problem was in the
definition of _IO_putc in libio.h: ()'s didn't protect an argument which
was cast to an unsigned char.]
